April 15, 2012

Unwanted behaviors like barking and biting can all be unlearned. Even if there are still a few slip-ups, any behavior can be modified with the tips in this article. With a good training program, any dog can be a trouble-free companion.

Teach everyone in your family to use the same commands to train your dog. If the dog jumps up and you use “get down” but your husband says “no boy”, the dog will get confused. By having every single family member use the same commands, better success will be achieved for training your dog.

Make sure that the only items your dog can reach are chew toys that are specifically made for dogs. Take it away, and give him a chew toy. If the puppy is suffering any pain from teething, freeze a wet washcloth for him or her to chew on.

The younger a dog is, the easier it is to train. Younger dogs learn more quickly and easier than older canines. If you train your dog when he is a puppy, then he will continue to be a good dog for the remainder of his life.

Keep your dog active. Just like humans, dogs can become bored easily. Bored dogs are harder to train. Your dogs will obey more quickly if you keep them well exercised. Bring your dog along when you walk or jog.

Big dogs that like to stretch out or lie on their backs need a big bed. It is possible to purchase large, rectangular beds that are ideal for big dogs; alternatively, you can get a crib mattress for your dog to lie on. This has its advantages. The most apparent being that you can easily change the fitted sheets on it. This is also good because mattresses for cribs are waterproof.

When training a dog, make sure to stay consistent. Have a set list of commands that everyone in the household knows. Reward your dog for following commands. Do not reward your dog if he doesn’t obey. If everyone is on the same page, the dog will better understand what is expected of him.

Walking on a leash is a big step in your dog’s training. This is important for both the dog’s safety, and your own.

When you are working on crate training with your dog or puppy small steps is what works best for them to get used to it. Once your dog seems to have acclimated to the crate itself, close the gate and feeding him through it. Gradually increase the amount of time your dog spends in the crate, starting with just a few seconds. If the dog becomes agitated, slow down a little more to make them more comfortable.

Training a dog is easier than you might have previously realized. With a positive attitude and sufficient knowledge, dog training can be a huge success. Dogs are capable of thriving with the right training.
